We all want to read faster so we can learn faster or we can buy new books, but the problem is we are very slow. There are people who read more than 100 books per year, and there is me who read 11 books a year ( but now I am reading my 12th book ). I searched on some weird websites, asked some bookworms and now I am going to tell you how to increase your reading speed. Hi, I am Ujjwal Chaturvedi lets begin.

how to read fast?

Why are we slow?

We are slow because we have a low attention span. Attention span is the amount of concentrated time a person can spend on a task without becoming distracted ( Wikipedia ).

Smartphones and PCs are responsible for our low attention spans, here's why, Staring at a quick changing screen cause our brain to get addicted to motion, imagine when you click Facebook app icon on your phone it suddenly covers your whole screen and in a flash we are inside and now the endless scrolling begins.

When you start reading a book, your brain is excited but you have to pay attention to a page for at least 12 minutes but it starts craving for motion and swipes and scrolls and likes, and soon it starts sending you some memories when you were on your phone or it will remind you that check your notifications. If you are not affected by phones then your brain will remind you of your past and send you loads of fatigue.

Now I am mentioning some solutions to this problem.

1. Choose a Place

Find a place that is cosy, peaceful and suitable for you. Reading place is as important as your favourite book. Reading spot triggers our brain to get into reading mode. Find a place where you can read for a long time without getting distracted or interrupted.

2. Point a Pen

Point a pen on the words along with your reading. This way is the best way that saves you from getting lost and starting that page again. I personally follow this technic and it really works.

3. The 30 Pages Rule

This rule is so popular these days among noob readers like me. Read 30 Pages Daily, and an average book contains 300 pages so it will take 10 days to finish one book, it means 3 books per month and 36 books per year.

30 Pages x Daily x for 10 days

1 book in ten days x 3 books per month = 36 Books Per Year

4. Choose a Book that you want to read

Choose a book that attracts you, if you are not interested to read a book no one can make you read it fast. I mostly read Non-Fiction books and I love to read them, imagine you love fiction books and someone gives you Science textbooks to read, You will never gonna finish it.

Sometimes we have to develop an interest in what you are reading. When I started reading I had two options
  • Fiction
  • Non-Fiction
I could have easily fallen in fiction like most beginners do, but my goal is to learn and develop me, I am not here for entertainment. Maybe your goal is different from me.

5. Taking break

Sometimes reading continuously makes our brain tired and affect our speed, in that case, we need a break. Read for 25 minutes and take a break for 5 minutes, in that time you can drink water, wash your face, drink coffee or you can listen to music. This method is used by those students who are preparing for a competitive exam.
